Q: What is an Ecological Sea Kayak Tour?
A: It is a low-impact way to experience natural areas and observe and learn about nature and the environment you are traveling through.
Q: How do you choose a sea kayak outfitter?
A: You should ask about their safety record and how much experience the guide staff has. Find out what kind of equipment is used for the tours. See what the group size is and how long the tours are. Make sure that you are comfortable with what is being offered and feel that the outfitter will take care of you and your family on a tour.
Q: Are the sea kayaks stable?
A: Yes. The sea kayaks we use are Necky Looksha T’s built right here in Maine. Their length and width make them a very stable boat and the rudder make them very easy to steer.
Q: Will I see wildlife on my sea kayak tour with National Park Sea Kayak?
A: The chances are very good. We paddle close to the shore and islands which increases our chances. We are always looking for Bald Eagles, Osprey, Cormorants, Harbor Seals, Harbor Porpoise, Loons, and other shore birds. Don’t forget your camera!
Q: How old do I need to be to go on a tour?
A: Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be paired with someone over 16 in your group and all participants need to be 56” tall (4’8”, 142 cm).
Q: What do you do about an odd number of people in a group?
A: If at tour time the total group size is an odd number the guide will decide based on conditions and peoples experience whether someone can go alone, or the guide may pair themselves up with someone. It the tour size is an even number the guide will assist in putting two people together. Keep in mind with families that anyone under the age of 16 needs to be paired with someone over 16 from their own party.
Q: What is your cancelation policy?
A: You need to give us a least 24 hours notice so that we can try to fill the seats. If we are not given 24 hours and we are unable to fill the seats you will be financially responsible.
Q: Do you paddle in the rain?
A: Yes, we do. We paddle rain or shine. Our tours are not canceled on a forecast. The guides monitor the weather and watch the radar so they can make an informed decision. We will not go out in unsafe conditions like excessive winds or thunder and lightning. You need to trust our experience and expertise and know that we always strive for safety first.
Q: Can I make a reservation on line?
A: No. You can make a reservation request and we will send you an email back to let you know what is available. It is then up to you to give us a call to make a reservation and secure your spots with a credit card.
Q: How far ahead do I need to make a reservation?
A: Generally we recommend 10 to 14 days ahead of time, especially in July and August. We only run six tours a day and can only take out 12 people on a tour per state law. It is always good if there is a specific date and time that you book sooner rather than later. You can always call us at 800-347-0940 or 207-288-0342.
Q: How cold is the water and what is the normal air temperature?
A: The water temperatures range from the high 40’s to high 50’s depending on the time of year. The air temperatures can get up into the 70’s and 80’s during the day and cool off in the evening to the 50’s and 60’s.
Q: What should I wear on the sea kayak tour?
A: It is important to dress in water friendly layers. We recommend shorts and t-shirts for your base layer. For extra layers you should bring water friendly materials like windbreakers or synthetic fleece. Your feet do get wet, so if you have water shoes that you are comfortable in please bring them along. Heavy cotton sweatshirts and jeans will not keep you warm. It is also a good idea to make sure that you have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
